What is the viola?
Slightly larger than a violin, the viola has a deeper sound. A regular member of an orchestra, the viola is also written for as a solo instrument and has four strings. The viola comes in a child’s size but due to its lower pitch necessitates more pressure on its four strings than a violin; it likewise uses a bow of horsehair to be played. Both instruments are generally held and played the same way. Among the great classical composers, many preferred playing the viola in ensembles versus the violin such as: Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach. After the twentieth-century, there was an explosion of music written for viola in classical, folk, and even pop genres. Those pop bands who have utilized viola include: The Who, The Cure, The Beatles, Velvet Underground, and Van Morrison.
